C&IS IN LA SUMMER 2019 PROGRAM

This summer brings a newly designed, collaboratively taught immersive experience in Los Angeles. Students will earn three credit hours through JCM 452 and JCM 453 and gain invaluable insight to industry, develop networking skills and gain resume and portfolio content. This summer includes summer internship credit!

As part of this program undergraduate students live in the heart of Los Angeles, directly across the street from Warner Brothers studio lot and travel all across the city to learn about the working of the news and entertainment industry. Students will be required to secure industry internships where they will be during the day and in the evenings will participate in a faculty-led intensive study of entertainment, creative media, news media, visual journalism, film, television and other aspect of industry. The program teaches necessary networking skills and brings student into studios, on to sets and into production offices. A large component of this program is networking with industry professionals and Alabama alumni.

Classes will be co-taught by Dr. Rachel Raimist who is a tenured faculty member in JCM and a member of the Directors Guild of America for her work directing scripted television programs. Learn more about Dr. R. here.

This program gives students professional experience through industry internships, helps students gain contacts with working professionals and connects students with insiders with valuable industry knowledge.

Class will meet in Los Angeles during the evening. Some weekend class activities are also required.

The summer 2019 program will take place during the full summer session. We will move into our apartments in Los Angeles on Tuesday, May 28 and the program will conclude on Thursday, August 2.
As part of this course students will:
  • Intern for a film, television or media company in Los Angeles (students must pre-arrange internships)
  • Learn about the entertainment industry and the myriad of career paths in film, TV & media industries
  • Experience a private, VIP behind-the-scenes tour of Warner Brothers Studio backlot
  • Tour the famous Paramount Studio and other studio lots in Hollywood
  • Tour the Dolby Theater, home of the Academy Awards (Oscars) in the heart of Hollywood
  • Visit working production offices, studios, film and television sets and VIP screenings
  • Attend live to tape television shows for sitcoms and late-night television shows 
  • Receive a private tour and access to events at the Writer's Guild Foundation and Library (WGA)
  • Attend Directors Guild of America (DGA) and American Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences (AMPAS/Oscars) industry screenings & educational events in Beverly Hills
  • Meet industry professionals who work at Fox, Spotify, Lionsgate, Disney, Paramount, MTV, NBC, Disney XD, Nickelodeon, Amazon Studios, Netflix, Comedy Central, Discovery Network & more
  • Experience the magic of a Hollywood Bowl screening with the LA Philharmonic playing live
  • Visit the Paley Center of Media Exhibit on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills
  • Visit museums including The Annenberg Center for Photography, The Getty Center, The Broad in DTLA, The LA County Museum of Art and other venues that house media collections in the city
  • Network with many University of Alabama alumni who live and work in Los Angeles
